Post Views: 1,974 I have been talking more and more about catch technique lately because slot defense has become more important in today’s game. Slot wide receivers are catching a lot of passes. Their third down effectiveness is extending drives and keeping defenses on the field. With that in mind, it has become important to put the clamps down on these pesky route runners and get the passes pushed back outside of the numbers where the completion rates are not as high. One of my favorite techniques for limiting the effectiveness of slot WRs is catch technique. When mastered, it is the best weapon to deploy on slot WRs looking to get into open space quickly and get the quick pass from the quarterback. In this video, I analyze a catch tech rep by what appears to be a high schooler vs. a WR with a ton of moves in his route. One of the mistakes in thinking that some defenders make is thinking that they need to have their feet busy in catch technique. Nothing could be further from the truth. This video explains why.
