Pedal crossover

Successful training for a defensive back stems from putting yourself in positions that you will most often find yourself in during a game and becoming proficient in executing the movements that will be necessary to be successful during the play.  It’s pretty simple.

One of the most duplicated positions that a defensive back will find himself in during a game is in the position of back pedaling, opening his hips and then having to make a break.  If you are playing a zone coverage which every team does at some point,  you will find yourself getting pushed up the field by a WR who then breaks his route off.  His job is to get you out of your back pedal and get your hips turned before he breaks his route off.

Since we know what the WRs job is,  it is important that we get training on being in that position and getting out of it with the greatest efficiency.  That’s where this drill comes in: Backpedal – crossover – break.  While the drill seems simple,  there are definitely are a list of little things that you need to be both aware of and master if you are going to be successful in executing it.  Not being aware of those things and routinely practicing it wrong can be detrimental to you because as we all know,  bad habits are hard to break.

In this video,  I breakdown,  step by step,  what it is you need to do in this drill to successfully transition from your backpedal into a crossover run and then get out of your break.  It is important that you pay attention to detail here as it is all the difference in you being good at this or not.
