Post Views: 1,702 By the very nature of your name “safety”, you are assigned a responsibility and that is to be there where help is needed and protect the defense from ultimate danger. When you are assigned the responsibility of deep help whether that is in the post or on the hash, the entire defense, especially the cornerbacks, are relying on you to be there. The techniques and alignments of the cornerbacks is based on the safety being in a certain area to provide help. When you abandon that responsibility, you erode the trust of the cornerbacks and the defense. This leads to the cornerbacks abandoning their techniques because they do not trust that you will be there the next time. Often times, the cornerbacks take the blame for a ball being caught by a wide receiver because they are the ones that originally lined up in front of them. So with their “ass” on the line, they will do what they have to do to protect their name and reputation. This involves changing their tactics if they feel their safeties are not reliable. In this video, I analyze a play in the Raiders vs. Packers game involving what appears to be Cover 1 with man coverage by the corners and deep safety help. The play resulted in a big gain for the offense. I analyze what went wrong and the steps that can be taken to avoid this situation.
