Speed turns are frequently used but should they be? My answer is no.  A speed turn is an emergency move and I mean a real emergency move.

Giving a wide receiver the back of your head is not the move.  You have no eyes back there!! When you open your hips as a defensive back,  most good WRs will see that as an opportunity and attack your blind spot.

While there are times that we have no choice but to abandon our backpedal and open our hips because the WR has broken our cushion,  we do have a choice to make once the attempt to attack our blindspot is made.

In this video you will see the reasons why I say the proper move is to flip your hips and turn into the WR as opposed to spinning away and giving him the back of your head with a speed turn.

The speed turn is favored by a lot of DBs because their is little speed loss in making the turn.  This allows you to keep vertical leverage on the WR and avoid getting beat to the deep ball.  However,  as time has progressed,  WRs have gotten more and more aware of it and have used it to get major separation on shorter and intermediate routes.

Properly training yourself to hip flip will not result in any significant loss of speed and will give you the added benefit of keeping your eyes on the WR so that you can attach yourself to his every move.  I have a couple of videos in the drill section of the member’s area that will help you to enhance your hip flips and cover better vs. blindspot attacks. Enjoy this video breakdown.
