AEDB Breakdown: Calvin Ridley vs. Michigan St. DB

By: Chad Wilson – All Eyes DB Camp

Sometimes safeties have to cover 1-on-1 and it can be a scary thought.  However,  with the use of basic footwork and hip turns,  we can make it less of a catastrophic event.

In this All Eyes DB Camp Breakdown video above,  I take a look at the mistakes made by a Michigan St. safety that was given the task of covering All American WR Calvin Ridley in the slot in a college football playoff game three seasons ago.  The result was a touchdown but it could have been avoided.

Between fear and the inefficient use of a back pedal,  hip turn and leverage,  it became a disaster.  Now granted,  it was a tough situation for the safety be in but there were definitely things that could have been done to help himself.

There’s a lot for you to learn in this video.  Weaving in your pedal,  using your hip flips and shuffling are all basic footwork that can help you stick to WRs better all over the field.
