Post Views: 1,561 In another installment of “Inside the Session” I am at XPE Sports training facility in Boca Raton instructing a high school group on the essence of press coverage before engaging in a kick slide drill. Often times as coaches or trainers we will rush through a practice or a session throwing drills at our athletes without taking the time to explain why they are doing the drill and when it would be applicable. You’d be surprised how many times a player will do a drill and not have a true idea of when they would use it. If you did one less drill in your session for the benefit of adequately explaining the benefit of the others then you have done a good thing. In this clip, I am explaining to the group that the major purpose of press coverage is to disturb both timing and spacing. That objective is achieved by forcing the WR to go wide and then getting leverage on them up the field. After the discussion, the athletes then move into a kick slide drill that is designed to hone their lateral movement skills for press man. Developing this skill makes them adept and confident in being able to widen the release of a WR before making contact and getting up the field with them.
