Post Views: 811 Exiting the line of scrimmage with a wide receiver during a press man rep is a highly under trained skill in defensive backs. Much of the emphasis in press man is placed on what is happening within the first 2 seconds of the rep. Most players and coaches focus on moving their feet to either cut off or mirror the wide receivers release as well as where to place the hands on a jam. Equally important in the whole press man puzzle is how you exit the line of scrimmage when the receiver gets into his route. Do it right and your chance of having a successful rep are high. Do it poorly and the chances of you making a play can plummet. It’s a shame too because great work at the line of scrimmage can get undone by taking poor angles or not having the proper body position once things leave the line and start getting real. One of my favorite drills to teach how to exit the line during press man is my ‘Slide N Get Up’ drill. I give a full explanation of it in the video below but in a nut shell, we want to get vertical on most releases (on all outside ones) when the receiver exits. Taking a proper angle and doing so explosively sets up to be there when the ball is thrown.
