I think we all know who makes the offense go don’t we? The fat contracts, the attention, the praise, etc. tells us that it is the quarterback. As such, defenders, especially guys in the secondary, should study the quarterback to get a clue as to what is going to happen on a given play, especially when we are in zone.

Some coaches will tell you to read the quarterback’s drop but what does that actually mean? So many times I watch defensive backs in zone and some man coverages looking in at the quarterback but their actions don’t match the action that they are looking at. This could stem from a number of things like not knowing what to look at, not believing what they are seeing or just plain fear of reacting because they are worried about getting beat deep.

In the clips that I break down below, you are going to see reading the quarterback at it’s finest. You will watch Washington Football Team cornerback Jimmy Moreland, read the quarterback and have his footwork and actions match what he sees the quarterback doing. It’s really a beautiful sight. As they say, I can show you better than I can tell you so watch the video below and listen to me as I break down what Moreland did on the play that got him the interception. I look forward to you doing the same.
