Post Views: 1,400Well this should be entitled what did “they” do wrong as I am critiquing two players in this one clip. This is a bowl game from 2020 between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Michigan Wolverines. In this clip we have a doubles formation which means we have two wide receivers on one side with defensive backs in press man coverage on both of them.Unfortunately for the defense, both players were beaten by the wide receivers. This is an opportunity for me and us as I break down where both players went wrong in their technique to open the door for them to get beat. You can get the full breakdown in the video but to give you one key point from each rep, it is important for you as a defensive back to have a plan when you go to the line of scrimmage to play press coverage. Sure that plan may need to adjust once the ball is snapped but have a plan you must. Having a plan gives you more confidence in your movements and prevents you from being off balance and prevents you from making too many unexpected moves. An array of unexpected moves typically lead to disaster. The second thing I will point out is that when you are playing in the slot, being aggressive is the way to go. If you are playing catch technique, what is in your mind when the WR reaches you in his release is very important. If you are thinking about running with the WR, then you will bail out on the jam, open the gate and allow the WR to run through an open door and to success. Instead, have in your mind “make contact”. That will keep you square in front of the receiver, allow you to get your hands on him and disrupt his route. You will not match the speed of a WR that has been running for 4-5 yards already. Commit to the technique, keep your eyes down and get hands on that slot.As always, if you have any questions or comments about this video or the member’s area, feel free to reach me via email at: cwilson@alleyesdbcamp.com. – Thank you for being a member.
