Post Views: 1,714 When you are playing defensive back, focus and attention is required. That is not something you did not already know. However, what is not fully understood by defensive backs is that your focus and attention is needed every snap. Granted, what I am asking defensive backs to do is not easy. However, the great ones really understand this and lose focus a whole lot less often than the average player. In this episode of What’d He Do Wrong, we have a case of losing focus. The wide receiver is DaVante Adams who is one of the premier route runners in the league at the current moment. The defensive back is Donte Jackson an up and coming young cornerback for the Carolina Panthers. What is on display is a breakdown in eye discipline and execution of the defense. In the clip, Jackson appears to be in a form of zone coverage. One can not be entirely certain from this clip exactly what the coverage was. It could be a fire zone, a regular cover 3 zone or some loose form of man. What is apparent though is that Jackson has help on the play and failed to make proper use of the help in the clip. What I often tell my young defensive backs is that it is not good enough to just know what your job is in a defensive call. If you really want to be a playmaker, then it is in your best interest to know where the other defenders are supposed to be. This prevents you from overplaying the defense as you will see Jackson do in this clip. So review the clip below with my commentary and give some thought to the pointers and criticisms that I give. I think you will find them useful.
