Post Views: 316 7-on-7 season is officially here, and for a defensive back, it can be the most frustrating time of the year. You’re playing in a “pass-happy” environment with no pass rush to help you out, and it often feels like the rules are stacked against the defense. However, if you approach it the right way, 7-on-7 is the ultimate laboratory for your eye discipline and leverage. Here is your survival guide for the spring circuit. 1. The “No Pass Rush” Reality In a real game, the quarterback has about 3 seconds before he’s under duress. In 7-on-7, they often have a 4-second “count,” which feels like an eternity. The Fix: You cannot rely on the QB to get rid of the ball early. You must stay in your pedal or your crossover longer than you think. This is the perfect time to practice your “Buffer Zone” management—don’t let the WR get chest-to-chest with you too early in the rep. 2. Eye Discipline: Ignore the “Dink and Dunk” 7-on-7 offenses love the underneath “under” routes and shallow crosses. They want to pull your eyes away from your deep responsibility. The Rule: Trust your keys. If you are in a deep zone, do not “bite” on the underneath route until the ball is actually thrown. In 7-on-7, “almost” making a tackle on a 4-yard hitch isn’t worth giving up a 40-yard post. 3. Playing Through the Hands Since there is no “real” tackling, the catch point is everything. The Technique: Focus on the “Late Hands” rule. Don’t reach for the receiver’s arms early (DPI risk). Wait until his eyes get big and his hands go up, then punch through the pocket. — Master the 7-on-7 Circuit with a Proven Arsenal If you want to dominate this spring, you need more than just drills—you need a strategic blueprint.
