Post Views: 2,090 Press man has become all the rage over the years for defense being played at all levels. Many defenses have opted to go for trying to disrupt routes at the line of scrimmage while getting pass rush to throw of the timing of the carefully scripted plays being run by the offense. The most popular route that is run by a WR faced with press man coverage is the fade. With that being the case, being able to defend the fade just plain makes sense. One of the biggest problem in defending the fade is getting the defensive back to get his head around and make a play on the ball. Even the casual fan of the game recognizes this as a problem as there are many times that the defender opts for staring at the WR while the ball is coming and then doing something clumsy. This will often result in a ball misplayed or a pass interference penalty. The Get in Phase Drill helps to alleviate that problem. The way the drill is set up allows multiple reps against a simulated fade pass in a short period of time. It gives the defender many reps at something they will often find themselves doing in a game situation. I will leave the explanation of the drill to the video of it that is posted below. Any time you can find a drill that gives you solid simulation with the ability to get multiple reps in a short span you have found a good thing. More reps, more practice = quick mastery of a skill. The other thing that that Get in Phase Drill works is the ability to get up the field quickly vs. a WR once he has exited the DB’s frame at the line of scrimmage. Once the combat at the line of scrimmage is done, the success of the cornerback in press now depends on his ability to take proper angles, have proper footwork and stay in good position as things progress down the field. This drill also works that element of man coverage. Now that you know the why of the drill, you can see the how. Check out the video below for the ins and outs of how the drill works.
