Press man is a very important aspect of a defensive back’s game these days. If you can’t press then you almost become a liability on some teams’ roster. Besides everybody wants to play press man. However, few defensive backs know how to play it right. The drill in this post will help you tremendously.

The name of this drill is called kick and get up. Basically it involves two athletes. One is playing a wide receiver executing a bit of a speed release trying to get outside of the defensive back’s frame. The other athlete is the defensive back trying to kick slide in front of the wide receiver for as long as he can before he has to plant and get vertical up the field.

It ‘s a pretty simple drill but there are some very important details that go into make the drill and the skill a success. In the video I have at the bottom of this post, I show you three different athletes executing the drill and all three of them do something well in their rep but also do something not so good in their rep. In the their reps we learn a lot from both what they did wrong as well as what they did right. I break down their technique within the drill. Take heed to the points that I am making and keep them in mind as you go out with a friend or teammate to execute it. Getting good at this drill will ultimately improve your press man skills greatly as it helps you widen the WR at the line of scrimmage and then maintain great position over the top on his as he goes down field.
