I have talked at length on this site about using your back pedal when playing defensive back.  More and more,  the art of back pedaling is dying as coaches think they can re-invent the wheel by having their players play turned sideways or turn immediately from an off position at the snap.

This is not something I am in favor of for a number of reasons but one of the biggest reasons is that remaining square in coverage for as long as you can whether you are playing press or off gives you a strong advantage.

Despite all of that,  there are times when you are in your pedal that you will have to turn.  In the video below I discuss the 3 phases of your back pedal that will give you an edge when playing off.  Most defensive backs playing off will go from their pedal straight into a crossover run.  In this video,  I show you a little “hack” you can use when pedaling that can put you in a better position to break on certain routes run by the wide receiver.
