It’s from one of my sessions during this past summer with Miami Dolphins DB Deshon Elliott, Pittsburgh Steelers seventh round pick Cory Trice and college football player Jaylen Herbert. In the video, we are doing a Press man foot work drill where we are working on our kick slide to widen the wide receiver. In addition to widening the receiver, we are working on how to progress up the field with the wide receiver to maintain our advantage. Some of the audio will be difficult to hear because there is music playing. However, there are great nuggets that can be heard in the video. In essence, I am explaining to the athletes how they should picture the receiver as an intruder trying to get into their house. When they are aligned in front of the receiver they are acting as themselves behind the front door. The receiver will work to find a way to enter their house. So if they are at the front door, he will slide outside of the door to try and enter a side window. If you slide with him, he will try the next window. At a certain point he will get to the side of your house. To safeguard your house you should stay in it and keep him out of it. Don’t slide so hard that you end up outside of your house with the intruder and give him the opportunity to get inside of your house while you’re outside of it. Essentially move the receiver away from your front door and side windows and put him on the outside of your house. Keep him there as he continues to try and move around the perimeter of your house. You do this by maintaining the proper relationship with him by staying inside or outside of him, depending on his release and where your help is. What a DB should not do is move into the middle of the wide receiver or too hard outside or inside of him, allowing him to redirect against your leverage and have access to a part of the field that you don’t want him to go to.
