A defender’s life pretty much amounts to adjusting to what the offense does.  One of the biggest weapons that an offense has versus press man defenses are close sets, stacked receivers and bunch sets.

When the offense goes this route,  the defense can either give in and start running more zone which your team may not be best suited for or they can continue running man coverage but institute some rules like ‘banjo coverage’.

What is banjo coverage?  It is a call made by defenders to pass off intersecting routes by wide receivers that are aligned closely or in a way that one or more of the defenders may be out leveraged.  As with all things in football,  there is a right way and a wrong way to do it.

In the video I have below,  I use a play that I posted in one of my DB quizzes on Instagram @alleyesdbcamp to talk about the major key in running banjo coverage so that you don’t have a mix up between defenders once the routes start to unfold.  Offenses know that banjo calls are going to be made by the defense and as such,  they have become pretty crafty in designing route concepts that could confuse the defenders involved.  By learning the tips that I give you in this video,  you can avoid confusion and play your banjo coverage to perfection.
