One of the more unnoticed and unchecked details for defensive backs in in playing press man coverage is their depth.

Typically, we are focused on things like leverage and keeping our eyes low. However, just as important as those two things is how far we are aligned off of the wide receiver.

Of course, we know that aligning too far puts us in the dreaded “no man’s land”. However, not enough is said about aligning too close to the wide receiver. Sure, I know we will see camp reps from time to time where the defensive back literally has his head in the chest of the wide receiver. I am not talking about that. Obviously, that is ridiculous.

What I am talking about, though, is what is more common. Many defensive backs align so close to the wide receiver that they overreact to any move the receiver makes. This puts them in a bad position right off the bat.
