Post Views: 1,674 When covering a WR, managing the space between you and him is crucial. Many defensive backs don’t know or ignore this when covering and pay for it. With the “Keep Your Distance” Drill, you learn how to keep your distance from a WR during the route and then close out the space when the ball is coming. WRs will try to lean on you during the route or get close to you in an effort to either push off when they make their break or grab a shoulder to pull through you to gain separation. The keep your distance drill teaches you to avoid that by having you use your near hand during the route to keep a safe distance away from the WR so you he can not lean on you. It also allows you to keep your focus on his hips so you can see his changes in direction and better react to them. The other part of this drill is teaching you to get hip to hip with a WR when the ball is coming to close out all of the space between you and him. This allows you to defend a throw to any part of the WRs body. If he can get to it, so can you. I end the video with a real rep example of this technique at work.
