catch technique

Slot wide receivers have become more and more important to offenses over the years.  At this point,  they are relied upon heavily to extend drives with 3rd down catches.

With that being the case,  defending slot wide receivers has created job openings for the defensive backs and opportunities for linebackers that can cover.

In my opinion,  the best way to cover slow wide receivers is by using the catch technique.  However,  it takes a certain mindset and the diligence to master it to make it work for you.

In this Inside the Session clip,  I am talking to my young defensive backs in a session in Palm Beach, Florida about the most important things they need to remember when playing catch technique.  Those things are:

(1)  Keep your eyes down

(2) Slide quickly to head up and get your feet set to make the WR move.

(3) Hold your line.  Act like a sliding glass door moving only side to side as necessary when the wide receiver approaches.

(4) Think contact when the wide receiver is near

The video gives you more of a visual of how these things work.  There are some windy parts in the audio as it was a windy day during the session.  However,  the most important things I had to say during this part of the training session are audible.
