Off man is often talked about but few master it. One of the big reasons why is because not many guys want to practice it and not a lot of coaches know how to teach it. Besides, guys love to spend a bunch of their time working on their press man skills.

Being able to play off man really makes the defense flexible. It gives the play caller the ability to disguise more and open up the door for confusion on the part of the quarterback. If the majority of the time that you play press you are playing man and when you play off you play zone then the pre-snap reads start to get really easy for the QB. Playing off man, if you get good at it, gives you the opportunity to make more interceptions as you don’t have your back to the quarterback as often.

In the video at the end of this post, I break down a few clips from the Senior Bowl about 10 years ago in which the cornerbacks were asked to play off man. I critique the reps and from that you can learn the rights and wrongs of what the players were doing. One thing you are going to notice in the clips is how efficient the DBs were in their back pedal. The back pedal is becoming a lost art and I don’t think it should be. I talk about that some in the video along with some other things.
