This is a great drill that I will do with defensive backs to hone their skills in terms of getting out of their breaks versus the quick game. It’s a great drill, and that it provides a competitive situation for the athletes. The athletes like the drill so they tend to be very enthusiastic while doing performing it.

The video showing the drill with my breakdown is at the bottom of this post. To give you a brief rundown. I use a soccer goal to do this and I have the players set up 2 yards off of the front post of the soccer goal facing towards the sidelines. Myself, or whoever is acting as the quarterback is aligned as a quarterback would be facing down the field. On my command, the player starts to backpedal, and at some point I will suddenly turn my shoulders quickly and attempt to hit the front post of the soccer goal like it is a receiver that I’m throwing a hitch to. The defensive back is focused on my front shoulder. Upon seeing my front shoulder turn towards that hitch, he is to plant his foot, turn his head to see the receiver for at least one step as he drives towards the hitch. He looks at that receiver to make sure that he is not running a double move. It also set him on the proper path towards the interception.

Full instructions on the drill as well as a breakdown of some of the reps is available in the video below. If you have any questions about the drill or any comments, feel free to send me an email to cwilson@alleyesdbcamp.com – thank you for being a member.
