Post Views: 439 Ever wonder why some guys just seem to make plays while others are always a step behind? Maybe you’re that guy who is consistently “almost” there but never quite close enough to finish. There is a specific reason for this, and it’s simpler than you think. What separates great defensive backs from average ones is knowledge. Great defensive backs know exactly what to do. Let’s be honest: most DBs didn’t start at the position. Many were running backs, wide receivers, or quarterbacks in their early days. Defensive back was an afterthought—a secondary position where they waited for their turn to go back on offense and score touchdowns. Consequently, unless they had elite coaching, many athletes began their full-time DB journey with a massive gap in their football IQ. From Reactive to Anticipatory If an offensive player-turned-DB can’t connect their offensive “know-how” to their defensive reads, they become a purely reactive player. Reactive players are always late. To excel in the secondary, you must have anticipation. Offenses are based on timing: The quarterback’s rhythm begins before the receiver’s break. The ball is often in the air before the receiver even enters his cut. To be a consistent playmaker, you have to know how to react to the break and anticipate when that quarterback is ready to trigger the throw. The Thirst for Knowledge The greats have a thirst for knowledge. They don’t just “do” the technique; they want to fully understand it. They have a burning desire to know exactly what the guys on the other side of the ball are trying to do to them. While some are lucky enough to have retained information from their days on offense, the best continue to acquire knowledge by: Obsessively watching film. Seeking out high-level mentors. Using every available resource to find an edge. Don’t Just Look the Part Every recruiting class is littered with great athletes who simply don’t know what to do. They look like “All-Americans” in a photo or on a track, but on the field, they are lost and easily exploited. Smart defensive backs are playmaking defensive backs. Commit yourself to using your resources, acquiring the knowledge, and executing with confidence. Nothing puts you at ease on the field more than simply knowing what to do. Ready to Stop Guessing and Start Anticipating? If you’re tired of being a step too late, it’s time to upgrade your Football IQ.
