Catch technique is a very effective tool for a defensive back to have in his tool belt.  It’s so effective that I have maybe a half dozen posts in this member’s area talking about it.  One of the problems with it though is that it is difficult to teach.  That’s also another reason why there are half a dozen posts in this member’s area about it.

One of the biggest reasons that catch technique is difficult to teach is because it plays on the biggest fear that defensive backs have in coverage and that is getting beat deep.  With that in mind,  it is important that all elements (eyes, feet and hands) are working correctly.

In this video,  I am showing you clips from a segment during one of my high school sessions.  In the video,  I tell you the key things that I teach when running the drill.  It is important for athletes to have a visual when they are playing or trying to execute.  I tell you the visuals I have them use and the mindset they need to have when playing catch technique.

While the technique can be difficult for some to grasp,  I will say that once you get the technique down,  it is gold especially for guys that are covering in the slot.  Slot receivers make a living off of short routes.  Effective catch technique can severely limit their effectiveness.
