Post Views: 2,008 We don’t talk enough about tackling around here but quite frankly, it’s one of, if not the most important things you will do as a defensive back. From time to time, I will bring to you information and video from outside of All Eyes DB Camp in an effort to teach you something. In this post, I am presenting to you perhaps the best video there is out there about tackling in our game today. As we all know, there has been a renewed emphasis on safety in the game of football. This has been done in an effort to preserve the longevity of the game. Many have complained about the rules softening the game of football and while this may be true to a certain extent, the truth of the matter is that brain injuries are no joke. Today’s video is from the Seattle Seahawks and narrated by their head coach Pete Carroll. He discusses the way the Seahawks teach tackling. Their technique was inspired by studying the way rugby players tackle. As we all know, rugby is a rough game that is played without the benefit of helmets and padding. In today’s game, this is the absolute right way to go about tackling. It removes the head from tackling while still providing a sure fire way of getting the ball carrier to the ground. If you are a player and tackling technique is not a focal point of your practices then I suggest you do two things. Implement this technique for yourself and suggest using these techniques to your coach. If you are a coach viewing this, I strongly suggest you begin implementing these techniques in your practices. Preserve the safety of your players while giving them the tools to win out on the field. You can not have a good defense if your players are not good tacklers. Many of the techniques in this video, I implemented towards the end of my coaching career. I grew up playing the game in the old school area where you lead with your facemask and tried to put your helmet on the ball carrier’s helmet so you can get “stick marks” on your helmet. Mind you, when I started playing ball as a youth, we were issued helmets that had three square pads on the top and two ear pads, that’s it. Yeah, for real. I had to make an adjustment as a coach after being in the game for over two decades. If I could do it, then you could do it too. Watch the entire video, take notes and make yourself a better player and or coach.
