Post Views: 2,155 Every defensive back, specifically cornerbacks, want to be elite at press man coverage. However, doing so requires you to master several small steps that allow you to dominate wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. One of the big things in press man too is being consistent. The best way to be consistent is to consistently drill the basic moves that allow you to master the art of press. When you are at the line of scrimmage up and close with a WR, time is of the essence. This means that reaction is at a premium. Proper reaction comes when there are fewer things to think about. In order to limit the amount of things you have to think about, you must continuously and consistently perform your drills so that when competition time comes, your movements are automatic in response to what the WR is doing. In the first part of my 3 part series on Outstanding Press Man Drills, we go over two drills that keep you in good position going down the field with a WR after you exit the line of scrimmage. I know that many people like to focus on what is happening right at the line of scrimmage but even more important as you move up in competition as a defensive back is what happens after the WR leaves the line of scrimmage. The reason I say this is because the higher you go in football, the better WRs are going to be at getting off of press. What that means is that you have to know what to do once you start running down the field with the wide out. When I am training DBs, I tend to work in reverse. I teach what needs to happen going down the field first and progress back down to what needs to be done right at the line of scrimmage. In volume one of Outstanding Press Man Drills we work on “Slide and Get Up” drill and “Kick and Turn” drill. Both of these drills teach you how to keep your over the top leverage on a wide out as they try to push their route up the field.
