In another installment of my “What’d He Do Wrong” series,  I analyze this clip involving a Cal Golden Bear cornerback vs. an Oklahoma St. WR.  This clip is a little different than some of the others I have posted.

To the naked eye it may be difficult to determine where the DB went wrong as it was good coverage,  yet the ball was caught.  It did take a perfect throw and a great catch to get the completion.  However,  even a perfect throw and a good attempt at a catch can be defeated.

Many defensive backs focus all of their time in training for being good at the line of scrimmage.  I don’t care how much you train on being right at the line of scrimmage,  WRs will get releases on you and get down the field.  So, it is important that we also know and train on what to do down the field.

In this clip,  the Cal DB does great work at the line of scrimmage but ultimately he was undone by a mistake or two made down the field and at the competition point (aka when the ball arrived).

Take a careful listen to the tips I give on this film and make it a point to work some of the pointers I give in it when you are training or are in practice. If you have feedback or questions on this video,  feel free to reach out to me at cwilson@alleyesdbcamp.com
