This is a first in a series of drill videos that I’m going to be posting. I am doing this to have a library of drills available in the Members area to eventually put together workouts for guys that need them.

By demand,  some of you have been asking for DB workouts because you aren’t able to make it to sessions that I’m having down in South Florida. So for that reason, I am going to be posting drill videos and using them to reference when putting together DB workouts at some point later on.

The first in the series of drills is backpedaling. Yes, that is the most basic of all defensive back drills but as I’m telling you in the video the devil is in the details. A lot of guys go out and do this drill or coaches run this drill in their practices and guys just go through the motions. This is the most essential skill for a defensive back (in my opinion) so you can’t just go through the motions. You must master it and do it better than anyone else.

So make sure that you watch the video and listen to the things that I say in there.  I also include a play made in a game using the back pedal that should convince you that it is a good weapon for a defensive back to have. The better that they can execute the backpedal, the more confidence they will have in it and it will lead to more plays being made on the ball because they are able to stay square.

    1. Closer feet in the pedal mean faster feet. When you widen your feet in the pedal, it makes your hips move from side to side thus slowing you down. You want your feet to land directly underneath you in your pedal. You don’t walk with your feet landing outside of your hips. Similarly you want your feet landing under your hips in your pedal.
