DB Drills

If you know me then you know I love my 5 cones.  This is another out of the 5 cone series.

Basically I am setting up my 5 cones (4 cones in a square with 1 cone in the middle).  In this breakology drill we are working several things in one short drill.  First we are working a weave,  then a 45 degree break,  then a pedal with a 90 degree break.  I can explain how we do that in this write up but I can’t really do it the justice that the video at the end of the post will.

First the athlete starts off at one of the cones at the bottom of the box.  The coach or trainer (with tennis or lacrosse ball in hand) is positioned at the far end off of the other cone at the bottom of the box.  On the trainer’s command preferably with his movement of the ball in his hand,  the player begins to weave to the cone in the center.  At or near the cone,  the trainer lowers his hand and the player breaks 45 degrees towards the cone nearest the trainer.  Upon reaching that cone,  the trainer pushes the ball towards the athlete signaling that the athlete should retreat in a pedal straight back towards the middle.  Upon reaching at or near the middle,  the trainer moves his hand to the right or the left signaling that the player should make a 90 degree break towards the cone in the direction the trainer moved his hand to.

At first,  the trainer tells the athlete which one of those cones he will make his final break to.  First a 90 degree break to the right then next time a 90 degree break to the left.  After that,  we work on reaction by not telling the player ahead of time which way that final break is going to be.  The trainer upon the player back pedaling to the middle quickly points right or left and the player is to react to that.  After the break and drive,  the player must then get his head around to find the ball thrown by the trainer and make the catch.

Points of emphasis.  Keeping your feet under your and your footwork quick and tight.  Second,  making breaks under your hips using plant and replace method.  Finally,  find the WR out of the break.  We simulate that by the DB taking a peak at the cone out of the break  and into his drive then getting his eyes back to the trainer to catch the ball that is thrown.

As I said,  the video is better than my words.  Take it in below.  As always,  you can send me any feedback or questions on the video to cwilson@alleyesdbcamp.com – Thank you for being a member.
